H.D. Mitchell was born and raised in the woodlands of Northern Ontario and has always been fascinated by native flora and fauna; venturing into the bush virtually from the time she could walk. Living close to nature not only provided her with ample opportunity to study her wildlife subjects in their natural habitat, but also instilled in her a deep spiritual connection with all living things, which she hopes her paintings reflect.
Each of her paintings is not only a detailed study of its subject, but a celebration of it and the vital niche it fills in the grander scheme of things, and like many wildlife artists, it is her hope that through her art, she can inspire a new awarenesss of the natural world and the urgent need to protect what little remains of the wilderness. Thus, she supports the efforts of environmental causes with her artwork.
She is a self-taught artist whose work has garnered more than sixty-five national and international awards at such competitions as the Chrysler Search for Canadian Wildlife Artists (1987); Ducks Unlimited Northern Ontario Art, Carving and Photography competition (1994-1998 inclusive); The CAEAS/Royal Winter Fair Equestrian Art Competition ('97-'98); Canadian Morgan Horse Association Art Contest (2000); American Morgan Horse Association art contest ('97-'98,01); Saskatchewan's Reflections of Nature wildlife art exposition ('98, '99, 2001-2003); Ontario Out of Doors Magazine/Ducks Unlimited Provinicial Sponsor Print Competition (2000); Canadian Warmblood Breeders Association Catalogue Cover and poster contest (2000) and the Agrium Red Ribbon Country Fair at Spruce Meadows ('99 and 2000); as well as being accepted into shows too numerous to list, spanning the North American continent. Her work has graced the pages of poetry anthologies, American fandom and has found a home in many private collections throughout Canada and the United States.
Ms. Mitchell enjoys all things creative and is also an award winning photographer, poet and writer. An avid horsewoman, it is her dream to breed her beloved Morgan Horses under her registered herd prefix.

The Artist and her Morgan mare, "Heritage Royal Destiny"
The artist is left-handed...one of the elite 10% of the population. Did you know....
- Lefthanders are wired into the artistic right hemisphere of the brain, which makes them imaginative, creative, witty, obsessive, infuriating, delightful and original but never dull.
- Left-handers are twice as likely to qualify for MENSA
- Your sense of humour is on the right side of the brain - it is no accident that so many of the great comics have been left-handed.
- Left-handed people have better 3-dimensional awareness and precision.
